Job Overview

This position is for people already working at the VA Southern Arizona Healthcare (SAVAHCS) facility in Tucson, Arizona.

Team: The Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) is a team of healthcare professionals who work together to give Veterans mental health care. They focus on making care available, easy to get, and centered around the Veteran’s needs. The team works with the Veteran and their family or loved ones to create personalized treatment plans and helps guide them through their recovery journey using proven and effective treatment methods.


Who Can Apply

This job is only open to current employees at the VA Southern Arizona Healthcare System (SAVAHCS). You must be a U.S. citizen and registered with Selective Service if you’re a male born after 12/31/1959.


Job Responsibilities

Key Tasks:

  • Provide therapy for individuals, families, and groups, using evidence-based methods.
  • Assess patients’ mental health and identify any challenges or difficulties they may have in their personal, social, or work life.
  • Perform mental health evaluations, including mental status exams.
  • Identify how mental health issues can be linked to other medical conditions.
  • Be familiar with state laws about involuntary hospitalizations and legal commitments.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to meet the Veterans’ treatment goals.
  • Help prevent suicide by working with the Suicide Prevention Team and following VA protocols.
  • Provide care for Veterans with severe injuries, such as brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Help Veterans and their families with advanced directives (legal documents about healthcare decisions).
  • Maintain records in line with VA policies and procedures.
  • Work with community groups to improve healthcare services for Veterans.

Additional Information:

  • You will work Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but your schedule may be adjusted based on the needs of the patients.
  • This position is not available for telework (work from home).
  • You must be open to adjusting your work schedule for patient care needs, including evenings and weekends.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience providing short-term therapy for mental health issues.
  • Experience working with Veterans and military populations.
  • Knowledge of Family Therapy techniques.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship: Only U.S. citizens can apply.
  • Education: A Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited school of social work.
  • Licensing: You must be licensed to independently practice social work at an advanced level.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of experience after receiving your advanced license. Some of this experience should be equivalent to the GS-11 level.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Skill in a range of treatment methods, such as individual, group, and family therapy.
  • Ability to diagnose complex mental health conditions.
  • Knowledge of how to measure the effectiveness of social work services and improve them.
  • Ability to mentor colleagues and students and provide consultations on patient care.
